Building on a strong heritage
The Pöyry story began in 1958 when over the course of one night Dr Jaakko Pöyry agreed to do the basic engineering for the Äänekoski sulphate pulp mill in Finland. From that night on Pöyry grew. First to Sweden and the other Nordic countries followed by Europe, the Americas and eventually to the rest of the world. By its tenth anniversary, the company had produced nearly 10,000 drawings and employed over 100 talented experts. And by its twentieth anniversary, the company had employed a dedicated and committed workforce exceeding 1000 people.
As the company grew internationally, so did its culture – enriched through diversity and shared knowledge. It’s clear that what set Pöyry apart already in the early years was its high standards of integrity and quality. Clients could always count on Pöyry engineers and consultants when a problem needed solving – and that remains unchanged today. It wasn't until 1993 when Soil & Water and Ekono Energy joined Pöyry that the company began to expand its roots by connecting its forest industry knowledge with the energy and environment industries. Soil & Water's roots date back to 1949 and Ekono's back to 1911.
By the end of 1990s, Pöyry had diversified further: it was now a publicly listed company, and by joining forces with Electrowatt Engineering, Pöyry had even stronger references in a variety of sectors. Electrowatt Engineering dates back as far as 1898 with impressive references such as the Rheinfelden Power Station and the Gotthard base tunnel.
The new century
In the 2000s, Pöyry developed a wave of new competencies in energy, water and environment, transportation and construction services. It expanded its local office network into nearly 50 countries.
In 2013, Pöyry further evolved its business, increasing its local focus in key domestic markets with the establishment of a distinct Regional Operations business. The move provided a better platform to serve the many small to medium-sized client assignments received. It also took important steps to expand its industry and energy positions, establishing a leading position in the following global competence lines in: pulp & paper, mining & metals, chemicals & biorefining, hydropower, renewables, thermal power, nuclear power, and transmission & distribution areas.
Three years later, Pöyry published a new vision and mission and launched a global initiative to simplify and streamline its operations to achieve an even stronger client focus. The Pöyry people were empowered and encouraged to act as internal 'intrapreneurs'. Among other things, this resulted in new and innovative solutions to better meet clients' needs in the changing world. By the end of 2017 Pöyry had announced 17 digital solutions across its global client sectors.
