Pöyry is about meaningful work and being able to respond to future challenges.
“Learning new things and international cooperation inspire me at Pöyry. During my 20-year career, I have designed HVAC for projects in 20 countries. These projects are technically challenging, and problem-solving is my thing, but learning about other cultures adds the extra flavour to this work.
I have worked at paper mill construction sites in Sweden, Spain and Germany, where I have worked in supervisory and commissioning roles. Working at sites and being responsible for e.g. the start-up of 600 motors and a ventilation project worth EUR 12 million have given me new perspective and taught stress management. In one of my projects, I was prepared to justify the technical solutions in terms of safety and energy efficiency, in line with the principles of sustainable development, when the client’s project manager said: “Please don’t use the words sustainability, health and safety!” After their comment, I decided to talk about process reliability and the lifespan of the engines. The client was happy when we talked about the real aspects of the solutions, the same thing in different words.
Environmental values and people’s well-being were the reasons why I decided to study HVAC. Last year, I had the opportunity to complete the WBCSD Future Sustainability Leadership Programme. The participants represented 33 nationalities, and the programme included studies in three continents. During the programme, we learned that clients in India, for example, want to conduct business in line with the principles of sustainable development, for there is no other option – “no clean water means no Cola,” as a representative of the Coca-Cola Company put it. Pöyry is about meaningful work and being able to respond to future challenges.”
