Pöyry congratulates its clients for their success in the Asian Power Awards 2017 in Bangkok

At a ceremony in Bangkok last week, projects in which Pöyry played a significant consulting role won Gold, Silver and Bronze awards. Pöyry congratulates clients, ACWA Power and Wartsila, on their success and looks forward to long and fruitful relationships.

1. Coal Power Project of the Year – Gold  2400 MW Hassyan Clean Coal Phase 1 IPP, Dubai

Pöyry acted as advisors to Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) for the selection of the IPP Developer ACWA Power.  The plant, currently under construction in Dubai, will play an important role supporting the UAE Clean Energy Strategy 2050. Hassyan is the first coal-based power plant in the GCC region, and is an ultra-supercritical plant designed to deliver best-in-class performance on efficiency and output as well as adherence to highest levels of international environmental best practices.

2. Gas Power Project of the Year - Silver 120 MW Musandam Independent Power Plant, Oman

Pöyry were advisors to OPWP for selection of the developer and subsequently the Owner’s Engineer for the Developer, Musandam Power Company.  Wartsila, Finland was the EPC contractor.  Musandam IPP is the first dual-fuel internal combustion engine plant operating in the GCC region.  The project received an award by the Oman environmental agency (MECA) for “Environmental Awareness and Protection of the Coral Reef” in 2016 in recognition of the various marine protection and monitoring efforts during the construction phase.

3. Gas Power Project of the Year – Bronze  485 MW ACWA Zarqa CCGT IPP, Jordan

Pöyry are currently the Owner’s Engineer to ACWA Power.  The plant is located in Zarqa Industrial Area and will replace Jordan’s first thermal power station – the Hussein Thermal Power Station, which had been operating since 1975 and has recently been decommissioned.  Use of combined cycle gas turbine technology helps to significantly reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, particularly compared to the plant it replaces.

"Pöyry congratulates ACWA Power for winning multiple Asian Power Awards: Independent Power Producer of the Year - Saudi Arabia, Power Utility of the Year - Jordan, Gas Power Project of the Year (Bronze) for Zarqa IPP in Jordan and Coal Power Project of the Year for Hassyan project in Dubai. Pöyry is proud to have been involved in both the Zarqa 485 MW CCGT and Hassyan 2,400 MW coal power projects”, says Ari Asikainen, Pöyry's Head of Thermal Power and Renewable Energy in the Middle East.

Asikainen continues, "Pöyry also congratulates Wartsila on securing the silver award for Gas Power Project of the Year for the Musandam Independent Power Project in Oman. We are proud to have been Owner's Engineer for this project”
