Pöyry releases white paper on Global Diet: a menu with radical consequences
World requires additional 660m hectares to sustain current food consumption levels.
Pöyry has published a White Paper revealing the radical consequences of our current culinary obsession and huge appetite for food. Since 2003, China has increased its imports of meat from Europe by 1900% and its imports of dairy, eggs and honey by 600%. Today, China alone requires an additional land mass equivalent in size to Argentina to subsidise its population. By 2050 there will be another 2 billion mouths to feed, requiring a 70% increase in production with no relative increase in land availability.
Pöyry’s Global Diet: a menu with radical business consequences provides insights into the increasing dietary pressures facing a growing world population with increased living standards, choice and expectation. Worldwide, an additional area of 660 million hectares is required – approximately the size of two India’s.
Dr Petri Vasara, Head of BioFutures Global Consulting Practice at Pöyry, explains: “The hand that picks the milk carton at the store is the very ‘visible hand’ that disturbs global patterns of resource use and trade flows. Land use, energy consumption, mining and the consumption of packaging and hygiene products are but a few examples. In this age of disruption, the global diet will be a surprisingly powerful catalyst for business change. All industries need to be prepared for the consequences.”
To ensure that these changes are beneficial, Pöyry’s recommends three tactics:
1. Better understand the link between consumer behaviour patterns and resource implications
2. Develop a stronger grasp of global land use politics
3. Develop new products, services and methods in logistics, fertiliser production, alternative energy and fuel solutions, packaging, hygiene products, recycling, forestry, agriculture and agroforestry.
