Pöyry Sweden joins the Government's ‘Fossil-free Sweden’ initiative
Pöyry is the first of Sweden’s major technical consultancies to join the Government's ‘Fossil-free Sweden’ initiative. Sweden aims to be one of the world's first fossil fuel-free welfare nations and the goal of the initiative is to achieve this by 2045.
The initiative is set to accelerate the transformation not only because it is possible but also because it is economically viable. It was launched by the Swedish government ahead of the 2015 Paris Climate Conference that resulted in an agreement to keep global warming well below 2°C above pre-industrial levels.
“We are very pleased that a large and broad technology consulting company such as Pöyry has joined ‘Fossil Free Sweden’. The shift is largely an industrial project and it is hugely encouraging that so many major players are now pulling together”, says Svante Axelsson, national coordinator of ‘Fossil Free Sweden’.
In addition to objectives within the framework of its environmental certification, Pöyry Sweden also aims to include a fossil-free perspective to client proposals where it is relevant and possible. In this way, Pöyry wants to raise the awareness both with customers and its own employees.
“Joining the ‘Fossil-free Sweden’ is a natural evolution in our commitment to the climate issue”, explains Jonny Stridh, Managing Director of Pöyry Sweden. “The world needs to reduce its dependence on fossil fuels and we are positive that Sweden is leading the development. Pöyry can and must contribute, and we look forward to working with other connected players, rolling up our sleeves even further and continuing to work for the most important transition of our time. We invite even more players to join, challenge themselves and us.”
“Our employees are passionate about the environment and addressing climate change. By subscribing to ‘Fossil Free Sweden’ we hope to strengthen their commitment further and at the same time, help create continued confidence among them and our clients. By joining the initiative we want to demonstrate that Pöyry is serious about contributing to a better future for Sweden and for the world”, says Frida Lanshammar, head of Pöyry Sweden's Environmental, Health and Safety consultants.
