Austria's main energy provider, Verbund Austrian Hydropower AG (AHP) wanted efficient utilisation and controlling of Danube river water resources. It also sought to refurbish data acquisition and to control the environment for the entire Danube River cascade consisting of 10 hydropower plants. As a result, it decided to build an integrated central control and dispatch centre.

The project, which started in 2005, is estimated for finalisation at year end 2009. It is carried out by a consortium consisting of Pöyry, Siemens AG, and VA-Tech. Pöyry serves as the project leader and is in charge of the

  • design and implementation of monitoring and controlling refurbishment of each plant

  • design and implementation of data transmission, storage and processing infrastructure

  • design and development of user interfaces

  • design and development of the Virtual Cascade including operation scenarios

  • supervision of the implementation project including the Central Dispatch Center

  • and servicing data transmission, storage and back-up infrastructure during project implementation.
