The Regional Council of Northern Ostrobotnia (Lapland, Finland) knew its energy strategy was dated. The world had changed since it was written in 2007, and to keep up with changing environmental pressures and uncertainties in energy demand, they needed a clear picture of what the future might bring. They asked Pöyry Management Consulting to examine possible energy scenarios from 2020 to 2050 and determine how to satisfy the demand for energy while reducing emissions.
Working with a large group of local stake holders, we developed detailed future scenarios for the region’s energy resources that included global energy trends, local political issues and key industry needs. The interactive and consultative process engaged constituents and found that it was possible to reduce CO2 emissions by 70%. The result is an up-to-date energy plan that integrates energy needs and environmental goals.
