The greenfield pulp mill project at Fray Bentos began with a feasibility study and pre-engineering services. This included negotiations with potential main machine suppliers and planning of the implementation method and mill layout.
Botnia opted for an "open book" concept, where the main machine supplier took sole responsibility for its own proprietary equipment and assumed joint responsibility with Botnia for the purchasing of all standard equipment. Through good cooperation between all parties the engineering work proceeded smoothly.
The engineering work Pöyry performed covered all discipline areas: process, mechanical, piping, electrical, automation and HVAC. Pöyry also assisted with procurement and time scheduling. We provided detail engineering for Balance of Plant and the main machine supplier (Andritz).
After completion of the detail engineering phase, we supplied support on-site during the erection period. Pöyry also provided engineering, project management, construction management, site services and commissioning services for Kemira's chemical plant at the mill site.
The Virtual Mill engineering application was used during the project and will continue to be used at the mill. This will allow cost savings and an efficient interface between engineering based on our Local Service concept and SAP-based maintenance.
The new mill has created 8, 000 new jobs in and around Fray Bentos and boosted GDP in the Rio Negro region by as much as 50 percent.
