In 2006, Pöyry was contracted by the City of Cologne to elaborate a flood protection plan including constructive measures to reach the protection level of 11.3 meters at the Cologne Gauge.
Floods of the Rhine river have caused major damages in the City of Cologne during the worst flooding in 1993 and 1995. The current protective measures are clearly insufficient.
Based on a thorough analysis Pöyry presented several measures to reach a new level of protection. The design comprised the following measures: elevation of existing dikes and extending them by sheet piles, construction of metal sheet pile walls with concrete head bulks, modification of streets' slopes. In addition, flood protection gates and manholes with non-return valves were installed.
The design has been elaborated 2006, tender documents were completed in 2007 and construction work is started beginning of 2008.
