Kárahnjúkar Hydropower Scheme, Iceland

Kárahnjúkar supplies electrical power to an aluminium plant by harnessing the potential of two rivers, Jökulsá á Dal and Jökulsá í Fljótsdal. The main reservoir created, with a usable storage of 2 billion m3, will be formed by the 190 m high concrete faced rockfill dam (CFRD) and two adjacent saddle dams.

Pöyry provided engineering services for more than 60 km of headrace tunnels, including project planning, final design, specifications and tender documents, geological studies, hydraulic concept, design and model testing, TBM expertise, design review and construction.
