Making trans-European travel a breeze ...
Salzburg’s main railroad station serves as a major transportation hub for western Austria but was antiquated and needed updating to meet the needs of the city’s 200,000 inhabitants and travellers passing through.
In 2008, ÖBB-Infra AG, the country’s national rail provider, issued an RFP for a project to transform the station into an international gateway and to revitalise the building itself, turning it from an eyesore into a point of pride for the people of Salzburg. After vetting a number of contenders, Pöyry was chosen to take on the work based on their deep experience.
The success of the project has garnered recognition outside of Salzburg including the “Staatspreis Design,” awarded by the Austrian government for excellence in public building. And it won the European Steel Construction award—the ECCS—in 2013.
