The Bitterfeld - Jüterbog line is part of the Berlin - Leipzig / Halle high speed route linking the Berlin region to southern Germany. The double track was upgraded to 200 km/h as far as Wittenberg and fitted with a new overhead line and signaling equipment.

The construction works included the reconstruction of the Bitterfeld and Wittenberg Stations with several new bridges over the Rivers Elbe and Mulde. The River Elbe railway bridge was provided with a double track and is 333 m in length. An adjacent bridge for the parallel B2 Federal Highway is 315 m in length and was included in the same planning process.

Pöyry was in charge of the project management including progress planning and control, cost planning and control, financial planning, contract management and quality control.
