The new metro extension will open greater journey possibilities in the Helsinki metropolitan area. It provides an energy-efficient solution to public transportation and has a positive impact on the quality of life of citizens by reducing exhausts and noise.

Pöyry is responsible for rock engineering at Otaniemi and Niittykumpu underground stations and twin tunnel of 3.5 km, as well as complete detailed design of access tunnels in Otaniemi, Keilaniemi and Niittykumpu. Pöyry is also responsible for HVAC and electrical engineering ofthe complete 13.9 km twin tunnel and all access tunnels.

Otaniemi is one of the most challenging areas because of its many existing underground spaces. There is a great amount of high technology that has to be taken into account when engineering in the area.

In addition to the metro line under construction, Pöyry is also designing a new extension. This line will be 7 km long and comprise five stations. Pöyry works as main designer for structural, rock and geotechnical engineering and provides rail engineering and architectural design services for the project.
