Safety of Machinery

Safety of Machinery

Machine safety is an important part of the machine's features and functions. All machines must be safe for users and others near machines. The Machinery Directive and country regulations e.g. the Finnish Government Decree on Safety of Machines set the essential health and safety requirements for new machines and machine combinations.

Requirements can be met by utilizing machinery safety standards (A, B and C type standards), for example machine specific C-type product standards. The general principles of machine safety planning, risk assessment and risk reduction are presented in the safety standard SFS-EN ISO 12100. The safety requirements of the machinery in use are defined in countries e.g. in Finland by the Government Decree on the safe use and inspection of work equipment. Depending on the case, modifying machines must meet either the requirements of the machine decree or the decree of safe use of equipment. It is important for employers and companies to be aware of the safety of their own equipment.
