Amounting to approximately 10,000 per year, client projects represent our main impact on social and environmental sustainability across the globe.
Our primary responsibility is to support clients in achieving their economic, environmental and social objectives. Our focus is on designing and managing the projects, supporting operations and consulting clients to the highest professional and ethical standards. This is conducted strictly within the framework of the clients’ final investment decisions and Pöyry’s contracts with them.
Our ethical standards for everyone who works for and with Pöyry are defined in the Pöyry Code of Conduct. We have zero tolerance for corruption, bribery, anti-competitive practices, discrimination and harassment of any kind at work. Pöyry applies the Code without exception in all parts of the world and requires the same standards from its sub-consultants and consortium partners. The Pöyry people can report any issues or concerns about potential ethics and conduct violations to their line manager, the responsible legal counsel or the Chief Compliance Officer. In addition, employees can use the SpeakUp@Pöyry service that allows concerns to be raised anonymously 24/7 in the native language of the user. After the service was is established in 2012, all the reported SpeakUp cases in 2013-2017 have been resolved and no human rights violations were reported through the service.
We strive to act responsibly and engage in an open dialogue within the communities we are present.
Students are a particularly important for Pöyry and its future success. In early 2018, Pöyry invited technology and business students from Aalto University, Finland, to discuss on global megatrends and their impact on societies and people’s lives. The students were also invited to a competition on the business opportunities that megatrends trigger. The winner will get to work as ‘CEO for a Day’, shadowing the CEO and CFO of Pöyry later in the spring.
Helping future business experts to reach the next level
Pöyry aims to build long-term relationships with future experts in the industry, energy and infrastructure sectors. The company has entered into partnerships with several top universities and other educational establishments in Finland that have key competences in Pöyry’s business areas. For students, this opens doors to the latest business insight and wider possibilities in academic research. It also boosts innovation, learning and the competitive edge of all parties, as well as contributing to the long-term success, globalisation and competitiveness of the wider community.
Pöyry actively contributes to local and international communities and stakeholder networks through numerous initiatives, organisations and interest groups relevant to its businesses, such as
- the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC),
- the International Federation of Consulting Engineers (FIDIC),
- the Tallinn e-energy Declaration community that aims to digitise the energy market further in the wake of the Paris Agreement, the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the role of the European Union to combat climate change,
- the Climate Leadership Coalition (CLC),
- the Swedish Government’s ‘Fossil-free Sweden’ initiative, and
- the corporate responsibility network Finnish Business in Society (FiBS).
In project work, we apply our internal guidelines and legally binding procedures. In addition, we have the tools to evaluate the clients' project related risks in social responsibility, as well as to enhance local stakeholder dialogue.
