Carbon Capture and Storage integral to decarbonisation, says Pöyry’s Dr Phil Hare
Comment by Dr Phil Hare, a member of the UK Parliamentary Advisory Group on Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) and Director at Pöyry Management Consulting.
The report by the UK Parliamentary Advisory Group on Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) calls for immediate UK government action to develop carbon capture and “save billions”.
What I would stress is that our recommendations set out a pragmatic means to create the institutional framework that can turn theory into practice. By freeing up the logjam that has blocked the development of a technology that is widely recognised as an essential part of the solution to the world’s most pressing need - to decarbonise.
Additionally, decarbonising heat is a challenge facing every one of the world’s governments and our recommendations demonstrate how to reduce carbon emissions from industrial sources and from the heating of more than 20 million homes.
This is a crucial time – with a new Government who can take on board our recommendations, creating a new delivery body to provide CO2-free electricity from fossil fuel power stations, and cutting the cost of meeting Britain's climate change obligations by billions every year.
