PÖYRY PLC Press Release 6 March 2009 at 10.40 a.m.
Pöyry has been awarded engineering contracts by Länsimetro Oy for the Western Metro extension in Helsinki, Finland. Pöyry together with its partners in cooperation Sito and Fundatec will be responsible for the rock and tunnel engineering including detail design of the access tunnels, metro tunnel Keilaniemi and Matinkylä, and five underground stations. In addition, Pöyry will provide the HVAC and electrical engineering of the whole rail tunnel and shafts. The value of Pöyry's services amount to EUR 1.3 million.
Comprising seven stations, this approximately 14 km long track will be an improvement to the public transportation in the Helsinki metropolitan area. While providing an energy-efficient solution to public transportation, the metro line also has a positive impact on the quality of life of citizens by reducing exhausts and noise. According to the environmental impact assessment of the regional Environment Centre, the new underground line will also provide the best possibilities for developing the urban structure in the long term.
Pöyry has long experience in carrying out demanding underground projects worldwide, such as the Metro of Maracaibo, Venezuela and the Metro of Bangkok, Thailand. Also in Finland Pöyry has been responsible for large-scale projects, for example the 13.5 km long Savio rail tunnel to the Vuosaari Harbour, seven highway tunnels of the E18 highway, and the ongoing Ring rail project which will integrate the Helsinki international airport with the public transportation system of the Helsinki metropolitan area.
