Supporting sustainable commuting...
Helsinki Airport has long needed a direct rail link to Helsinki City center. In addition, the surrounding metropolitan area has been growing steadily, and the Finnish Transport Agency recognised that environmental, time-saving alternative to cars and buses should be offered to people commuting to work. After assessing the options, a new Ring Rail Line was proposed. It will be an essential component of the city’s rail network that aims to not only function as an important route for commuters, but also spur the development of new residential and business areas in its vicinity. The line’s foundation stone was laid in March 2009. It will start operations in 2015.
Upon completion, the Ring Rail Line will connect an additional 200,000 residents and 200,000 jobs to the railway network. Daily train usage is expected to reach 50,000 passengers by 2025.
“The line offers an important route across the city, improving public transportation in the area,” says Juha Kansonen, Ring Rail Line Project Director, The Finnish Transport Agency.
Pöyry participated in preparing both the general and rail design and engineering plans, and is finalising the detail design for the tunnel and underground stations in time of writing. The job covers engineering for the track tunnels, the construction of two stations and two station reservations as well as technical systems, which will not only improve traffic safety and flow, but also make the journey a more pleasant experience.
