The Batak cascade was built between 1951 and 1959 as one of the first large hydropower developments in Bulgaria. The scheme is located between the towns of Velingrad and Peshtera and consists of the three hydropower plants Batak (40 MW), Peshtera (128 MW) and Aleko (64.8 MW).

The project consists of refurbishment of the Batak and Aleko power plants with respect to mechanical, electrical, hydro-mechanical equipment, as well as supply of instrumentation for dam monitoring and irrigation monitoring systems.

Pöyry's services included design and project implementation, as follows:

  • Replacing and refurbishment of mechanical equipment

  • Replacing and refurbishment of electrical and control equipment

  • Supply of equipment and material for dam monitoring

  • Supply of instrumentation for irrigation monitoring system

  • Engineering and project management for the entire rehabilitation work
