Project facts

Project Type: Energy

Client: Algoma Energy LP

Capacity: 70 MW

Start-up: December 2008

Algoma Energy LP, wholly-owned limited partnership of Algoma Steel Inc., has undertaken a cogeneration power plant that has 70 megawatt electricity and 750,000 lbs/hr process steam capacity. The plant is fuelled by existing blast furnace and coke oven gases from the Algoma Steel plant operations.

Pöyry services included complete detailed engineering, procurement and contract preparation for two by-product fuel-fired boilers and a 100 MW condensing steam turbine, including a blast furnace gas holder, boiler feed water treatment plant, cooling towers and an electrical step-down transformer.

A major tool used for the Algoma project was the Bentley 3D modelling software. The approach was successfully used to minimize interferences as well as achieving interdisciplinary coordination.
