The planned new construction of the underground railway system includes the central section of the new Line 2 running from east to west and crossing the existing Line 1 (north-south). The 2-track electrified line runs through two separate tunnels which also pass under the river Vistula.
A shield type tunnel boring machine is used and the cut and cover method is employed for the stations. The new construction is tendered as a "design and build" contract, including for instance shell construction and finishing, technical railway equipment and transport infrastructure. Basically, it comprises all disciplines, except the rolling stock.
