Project Type: SCA-A paper and newsprint mill

Client: Rhein Papier GmbH, Plattling, Germany

Capacity: 400 000 t/a

Total investment cost: EUR 540 million

Start-up: December 2007

With services from Pöyry, Myllykoski's new SCA-A paper and newsprint mill started up successfully in Plattling, Germany. It is one of the most modern paper mills worldwide and is the first to use online SC-A calendaring combined with "moisture gradient" technology and the use of pressurised groundwood.

Rhein Papier GmbH operates Plattling Papier and is an alliance partner of Myllykoski. The new paper mill produces newsprint, high-quality SCA-A offset and rotogravure paper grades using optimal raw materials. The main end uses of SC-A paper are broad-circulation magazines and catalogues, such as mail-order and travel catalogues.

Pöyry provided complete engineering, erection supervision, commissioning, start-up and post start-up services for the new production line, including the pressure ground wood plant (PGW) and utility departments. Services also included information technology infrastructure for production control and administrative functions.

A major tool used for the Plattling project was Virtual Mill, Pöyry's solution for creating, storing, maintaining, searching and accessing technical information. After completion of the project, the Virtual Mill tools and databases will continue to be used, thus enabling cost savings and an efficient interface between engineering based on Pöyry's local service concept and SAP-based maintenance.
