Veracel Mill started operating in May 2005, with a production capacity of 900.000 tons per year of bleached eucalyptus kraft pulp (BEKP). BEKP is a raw material used in the manufacturing of tissue and printing and writing paper products.
One hundred percent of the output is shipped through the sea terminal of Belmonte, built and owned by Veracel, where 9.500 DWT vessels take the pulp to Portocel port, owned by Aracruz Celulose, to be loaded on ocean going vessels.
The site area occupied by the installations was in excess of 2.3 million square meters.
Pöyry was involved in the project from the very early stages, providing pre-feasibility study and basic engineering. During the implementation phase, Pöyry provided Owner´s engineering, Balance of Plant under the EPCM (Engineering, Procurement and Construction Management) model, and detailed engineering for suppliers of EPC (Engineering, Procurement and Construction) packages.
At the peak of the construction project, there were more than 9 000 persons working directly at the site.
Total investment cost inside the fence was USD 860 million.
