FACES THAT MAKE PÖYRY GREAT - Markku Kaarlo Olavi Metsäranta

'What makes me feel proud to be Pöyry is carrying on the legacy of Dr. Jaakko Pöyry and his colleagues...'

Markku Kaarlo Olavi Metsäranta, Senior Advisor Project Control

What make Pöyry a great place to work are the colleagues that we have here, working on world class investment projects, meeting with other professionals and companies at the top of our industry.

I started at Pöyry in September 1974. I was going to a job interview in another company and while there was some spare time I went to see a friend who had studied with me and was working at Pöyry at that time. He decided to introduce me to his superior and the rest is history.  Obviously, I never went to that other job interview.

The initial position was that of  a cost engineer, and soon was transferred to engineering scheduling. Later on I succeeded my retiring department manager. During the years, the scope of the department grew, covering eventually all project services from overall project planning, scheduling, follow-up and risk management to document control, project control and invoicing. In the last phase I had the chance to participate in planning and control of several large Industry Business Group implementation projects, mostly in Brazil.

After 45 years working with implementation of a variety of type and size of projects, I have gained a vast amount of experiences, both good and not so good. I feel that this gives me a base to help search for the most feasible solutions and avoid typical mistakes. And that is what our clients appreciate. But besides that, I always wanted to share my experience with younger Pöyry colleagues, the same way I was lucky to gain help from my senior colleagues in the beginning of my career.

What make Pöyry a great place to work are the colleagues that we have here, working on world class investment projects, meeting with other professionals and companies at the top of our industry.

A project that I am really proud of is the first “Horizonte” project in Brazil. A key position in Pöyry´s team, managing an EPC delivery of a multi-billion and at the time, world’s largest green field pulp mill, was truly challenging but also rewarding. An on-time production start resulted in particular congratulations from the owner.

What makes me feel proud to be Pöyry is carrying on the legacy of Dr. Jaakko Pöyry and his colleagues, being part of a globally trusted and admired business partner in small and large, easy and challenging undertakings.

The first contract Dr. Pöyry signed stated “we’ll do everything that’s needed”. If our attitude continues to be as Dr. Pöyry’s 60 years ago, our clients will continue appreciating working together with the people that carry on the founder’s name.
